What began as a mid-size hotel project on East Las Olas Boulevard has evolved into one of Fort Lauderdale’s most anticipated luxury developments. The Whitfield, a reimagined 12-story mixed-use building, will combine boutique hotel elegance with high-end condominium living, promising a new standard of sophistication in the heart of Las Olas.
The Evolution of the Whitfield
Initially approved in 2021 as a 10-story hotel with 138 rooms, developers Steve Hudson and Charlie Ladd saw an opportunity to adapt their vision. The updated plan now features 81 boutique hotel rooms and 17 luxury condos, including penthouses priced up to $15 million.
“In hindsight, it’s really something we should have done in the beginning,” Hudson remarked, emphasizing the financial viability of incorporating condos into the project.
The redesign not only raises the height of the building but also enhances its exclusivity. Each condo will have private entrances and elevators, distinguishing them from the hotel’s amenities and guests.
Luxury Meets Practicality
The Whitfield’s new layout maximizes luxury and functionality:
- Residences: The 8th, 9th, and 10th floors will each feature five condos, while the 11th floor will house two sprawling penthouses.
- Exclusive Amenities: The 12th floor is designed with a rooftop pool, cabanas, a café, and two private dining rooms, ensuring a resort-like experience for residents.
- Independently Branded Hotel: Affiliated with Leading Hotels of the World, the boutique hotel promises five-star accommodations with nightly rates starting at $800.
A Strategic Pivot
Rising interest rates and escalating construction costs prompted Hudson and Ladd to rethink their original plans. Since securing approval for a 138-room hotel in 2021, project costs have surged by 50%. However, the addition of condos offers a strategic solution, as pre-construction sales are expected to help fund the project.
With prices starting at $3.7 million and penthouses reaching $15 million, the condos are designed for discerning buyers seeking privacy, luxury, and proximity to Fort Lauderdale’s premier attractions.
“These condos are going to have a private entrance and a private elevator, as opposed to some of the larger condo-hotels that are on the beach,” Hudson explained.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Whitfield is a deeply personal project for Hudson, whose family name inspired the development. The name honors his late father, Harris Whitfield Hudson, and continues through generations, reflecting a legacy of commitment to excellence.
Hudson and Ladd, who purchased the prime Las Olas site for $8.3 million in 2016, are confident in their vision. With construction expected to be completed in about two years, the Whitfield is set to redefine luxury living in Fort Lauderdale.
Transforming Las Olas
The Whitfield promises to elevate the Las Olas experience with its unique blend of boutique hospitality and exclusive residential living. Whether enjoying the five-star amenities or retreating to a private penthouse, residents and guests alike will benefit from this harmonious blend of luxury and functionality.
Fort Lauderdale is ready for its next icon, and the Whitfield is poised to deliver.
